  1. There was a alumni association of Bangalore University Social Work students and they did conduct some events in the past. Gangadharaiah, Gandhidoss, Vasu, Basu, Hema and many others were actively engaged in organizing the events. Later Gangadharaiah moved to Mysore and the momentum was slowed down. These are informal associations and hence will not have continuity. We all can consider reviving the old one or starting the new one.

Alumni Association should work on following:
    Improving professional education
Reputation of the program and do periodic programs to improve quality of education. When I was in 1976-1978, I lead a different strike of students asking for improved books to the main library on Social Work, inviting senior work professionals to come teach as Adjunct professors such as VK Calla, Dr. Nizamuddin, and many others who had achieved distinct professional credentials. Even after 30 years, I have left, I regret that there are no substantial improvement either in education delivery or get up of the department - when outsiders visit. When an alumni association brings in a new culture, current and future graduates feel they belong to an elite institution.
    Vasu Chikkatur Murthy, New York.

btw, the study I did in 1976-78, was enough to pass the New York State Social Work License Examination in Social Work in 1989, 11 years after my completion of studies without any recourse to preparation courses here in the US. Hence, do not think that the value of education is not valid in the world. How you look for and what you study is important than just spending 2 years in search of a degree or job.

  13. Neither I belong to Bangalore nor am I an alumnus of your college.
I was privileged to study in India and spent some fifteen years in teaching and some direct practice.
I have seen alumni associations and professional associations beyond the primordial relationship with the Alma matter.

I wish to congratulate every one when they wish to revive associations, Ramesha does these things so naturally. I guess it is his humility and vision for the future that makes things work.
People rally around him quite easily.

An observation that I wish to make on alumni associations and other forms of professional groups is that there have not been instances of single or multiple but continuous history writers. There are as you can see history makers. Someone before me praised all colleagues who used to teach at Central College social work department and talked about things and events that they did. Record keeping and handing over associations to new comers, a culture of moving on and mentoring have been the biggest casualties in my country of birth, India. I took the liberty to air this view as this is my personal view on things and events. Certainly people need not agree with me.

On this cautious note , I wish to congratulate Ramesha, an incredible energy source for his assistance with revival of your association.
    God Bless you all

  15. Dear Ramesh,

First i would like to appreciate your voluntary initiatives in social work activities.i proud to have a friend like you. here, you rightly pointed out few things.

Many occasions Mr.Gangadarayya and his team gave outstanding contribution for development for our profession through Bangalore University Alumni Association, they all gave their best commitment for association. We have to appreciate Mr.Gangadarayya and his team for the same.

Unfortunately sir moved to Mysore. With this, we lost one good and dynamic leadership for our Bangalore University alumni association. Pls try to take initiative, Once we all meet our elders along with Mr.Gangadarayya presence. Lets have a discussion and think about how to take it forward.

Hereby am requesting you all Professional Social Workers pls support your thoughts and value addition commitment to grow our association. Dont forget this is your duty and same time its your responsibility to show quick and positive action for the same.

Dear Ramesh, Lets have one 'Get Together' event, i will take complete responsibility and initiative to organize the event. The main agenda of the event would be self evaluation and self introspection about our commitment towards alumni association.

Pls Join your hands and thoughts for further move .....

    Thanks & Regards,

  19. Hi Bhimappa,

The intent, when this discussion started in this group, was to
reinforce and encourage to revive to all passive Alumni if they have
already Association. This communication was not just only for
Bangalore University it is applied to all Alumni association also.

The profession advise is that if there is no Alumni association so far
for any University students who are part of this discussion in this
group, it is high time for their development, professions development
and society development they need to have their Alumni.

    Regards

  20. Dear All
    Greetings of the day
My name is Dr G Pandu Naik, 1989 passed out MSW from Bangalore University
It is a nice initiative on the part of Niratanka founder Sri.Ramesh to start or revive the alumni associations of social work students. I give below my view points about how to go about doing it.

    1) Forming and managing alumni should be the initiative of the respective colleges. Since the colleges seems to be not showing inclination, we the ex students have to do it. However Roshini Nilaya is an exception because it has a well established alumni. Alumni will have success if both the college and ex students join hands.

    2) Should it be a registered or unregistered association: We have the choice to form a society, register it with the registrar of societies, maintain book of accounts, conduct annual general body meetings and continuously manage it for several years. Alternatively we can create an unregistered association and manage it.

    3) Should it be one alumni or several: Alumni has to be college specific or university specific. Hence students from every university can from a alumni.

    4) What should be the objectives: Should alumni serve its members or their juniors studying in the college. Generally Alumni is expected to help the colleges in organizing seminars, improving the curriculum, assisting the placement activities and so on. Alumni may also take up social service activities for the public and mutually beneficial services to its members.

    5) Who should manage it: It should be managed by a group of office bearers and committee members elected by the members.

    6) Who will finance its activities: Colleges should render financial assistance. Members may also contribute voluntarily.

    7) Governance issues: Accounts should be audited every year. Annual General Body meeting should be held annually. The office bearers should sincerely handover the charge to the new committee compulsorily.

    8) Perpetual excellence: Everybody can form an alumni which is easy. Success of Alumni depends not only upon continuing it for many years but also upon organizing professional activities year after year.
